Calculating Your GPA
It is important that you are able to accurately calculate your Grade Point Average (GPA), particularly when you are applying for jobs, and as you near graduation. Use the attached document to work out your GPA (both cumulative,
and law only) for your CV, in calculating your eligibility for restricted subjects, Honours and the University Medal.
Honours in Law FAQ'S
Q. Is eligibility for Honours in Law calculated on cumulative, or law only, GPA
A. The law honours is calculated using only the law courses
Q. Is the additional weighting of the IRP calculated as such:
1 semester = 10 CP
Weighting (if they get a 7) = 280
Or is it calculated:
1 semester = 40CP (with only 10CP actually counting towards degree requirements)
Weighting if they get a 7 = 280
A. For the purposes of calculating law honours, the IRP is weighted at 40cp, so a 7 would give 280. It is counted as 10cp towards your degree
Uni Medal FAQ"S
Q. What is the GPA requirement for a student to be awarded the University Medal
A. To be eligible for the University Medal, a student must have a GPA of at least 6.5 and receive a HD for the IRP.
Q. Does eligibility for the University Medal also take into account the additional weighting that is given to the IRP (as is the case for Honours), or is it simply calculated on the actual CP value of the IRP (10CP for 1 Semester, and 20CP for year-long)
A. Eligibility for the Uni medal does take into account the 40cp weighting for the IRP
