About AAR: The AAR difference

The offices of Allens Arthur Robinson stretch all the way from Sydney to Shanghai and from Phnom Penh to Perth. Allens Arthur Robinson offers one of the most comprehensive legal networks in Australia and Asia with staff based in 14 cities and eight countries across the region so it's good to know that wherever you are, some things never change.

At Allens Arthur Robinson we recognise that choosing a law firm to commence your career is a difficult decision. After all, at first glance many of the large corporate law firms appear fairly similar - we all offer impressive lists of blue chip clients and have won many awards. Given the tough decision ahead, we want to introduce you to some of our people. We hope it will help you get a feel for our firm, the type of people you may be working with and experiences to expect. Of course, we're happy to have a chat to you in person as well, so feel free to give us a call.

The career/life balance

Much has been said about the career/life balance in all industries and, in many ways, law firms are no different. People do work hard at Allens Arthur Robinson and, as at any big law firm, there can be long working days. This reflects workload peaks and troughs, rather than a culture that says you have to be at your desk until late at night, every night. We look after our people, structuring work around them where we can, and aim to provide a range of social and sporting events, staff benefits and support.

Flexible working arrangements

Flexible work practices can help establish a balance between work and other interests, particularly for staff with young families. Some of our policies include:

  • working from home
  • part-time work
  • religious leave
  • generous family-leave policies
  • service recognition awards

Attitude to billing

We recognise that in the first few years of life in the firm, graduates/articled clerks spend most of their time on a steep learning curve. The firm recognises that these initial years are a time for learning, so the basic benchmarks for billable and non-billable hours take this into consideration.

Sports & social activities

Sports and social events are an important part of your working life - they bring people together in competitive and non-competitive events, with an emphasis on fun, participation and getting to know your fellow colleagues. If the sports and social calendars of our lawyers are anything to go by, people at Allens Arthur Robinson keep themselves busy outside of work.

We provide gym membership to all staff, and regular sporting contests and events are held at lunchtimes, after work and on weekends. The firm also participates in sports days with other law firms and businesses. Our sports committee can help with applications for funding of sporting events. Social events include balls, parties, regular staff drinks and our end-of-year Christmas functions.
